Mercy Ali dumped her baby in a toilet

A mother of two in Balaka district south east of Malawi is expected to answer a case of concealing the birth of the child after she allegedly dumped her newly born baby girl into a pit latrine. [caption id="attachment_108825" align="alignright" width="349"]Mercy Ali dumped her baby in a toilet Mercy Ali dumped her baby in a toilet[/caption] Police says the suspect Mercy Ali of 26 years of age gave birth to a baby girl on the night of 30thApril, 2016 and then dumped her into a pit latrine. “The incident came to light after the neighbour to the suspect Mr Andrew Kalima heard a baby crying from the toilet when he went to answer a call of nature; and this made him to alert his neighbors and after confirming that it was really a baby, they called the Police who rushed to scene and managed to take out the baby alive with the help from the community,” says police spokesperson inspector Joseph Sauka. They then took the baby to Balaka District Hospital for treatment and safe custody. Sunday morning, Police revisited the scene of crime and made a conclusion that the suspect did not come from a far and this made them to pick Mercy Ali for questioning. Upon interview, Mercy confessed to have committed the offence saying that she did this for fear of her husband who is in South Africa. She said her husband went to the Republic of South Africa in 2012 and seeing that he has taken long, she fell in love with another man who impregnated her. Mercy  said no one and not even her neighbours knew that she was pregnant and that she gave birth in her house and later dumped the baby into a pit latrine to die. Meanwhile, the suspect Mercy Ali is on Police bail and is admitted to Balaka District Hospital where she is taking care of her child and is expected to appear before court soon where she will answer a case of concealing the birth of a child which is contrary to section 232 of the Penal code. Mercy Ali comes from Sosala village, in the area of Senior Chief Msamala in the same district of Balaka but was residing at Mangerengere location within Balaka Township.

Founder of the Living Waters Church Apostle Dr Stanley Ndovie Sunday laid a foundation stone for the construction of a multimillion kwacha 5, 000-seater cathedral in Mzuzu City. Already things have changed. When I look around, I see so many things are changing. Therefore, all the people just need is to move with the change. “I know that if people don’t change quickly they might lose out on what God is doing in the Northern Region,” Apostle Ndovie said. The site for the cathedral is about a kilometre from the Reserve Bank of Malawi branch and two kilometres from Grand Palace Hotel, some of the recent infrastructure that have changed the shape of Mzuzu and spurred the city’s economy. In his sermon during the service dubbed Mega Sunday, Apostle Ndovie preached against the tendency by some people to be contented with what they achieve at a particular time instead of striving for more or bigger things. “When some people have a success, they don’t want to move from there; they keep on staying in the same place doing the very same things all the time,” he said. The sermon was based on Deuteronomy Chapter 1 verses 2 to 6 which talks about God’s command to the Israelites to leave Horeb after they had stayed long enough at the mountain instead of moving into the Promised Land. “Now I want you to know that if you take long in your assignment before God, it will not be the problem of God or somebody else, it will be your problem because what you are assigned can take very short time for you to prosper. “It doesn’t have to take you too long. I will ask every one of you who has vision, those of you who want to accomplish things: why don’t you study the problems of Israel?” Apostle Ndovie said. Bishop Runwell Jimmy Kilembe of Mzuzu Living Waters Church said the current church building has proved small following the growth of membership over the years hence the new project. “Mzuzu as headquarters of the region, we want to build a cathedral that should accommodate a lot of people. Currently, the one that we have has become too small to accommodate us all,” said Kilembe who is also overseer of all satellite churches in the region. He said Mzuzu City alone has about 5, 000 members of which 2, 000 congregate at the Mzuzu main church where the cathedral will be built. “Our projected cost is around K200 million. God’s work is not done by one person. So we want all [satellite] churches and well-wishers to join hands so that this project is done,” said Bishop Kilembe.

That unique voice is Kelvin.” But judges Marvin Hanke settled for  Eunice Mhango and  Rudo Mkukupha-Chakwera picked Shanice Tandwe who emerged  a runner up. Despite selling five key players to the country’s top teams, Wizards formerly FISD Wizards began the game as the hungriest team compared to the Zomba based soldiers who seem to have lost touch in their previous two games. Wizard had most shots on goal by the end of the first 45 minutes as compared to Red Lions. Soon after the recess, Wizards were one-nil up curtsy of Patrick Phiri’s goal after a series of passes. Blessings Phiri could have added a second three minutes later but his efforts were blocked by Lions goalkeeper Jacob Kaunda. Kaunda was on the rescue again a minute later serving a short from Trevor Kalema. Lions started panicking after the hour mark with Loti Chawinga and Bonface Kaulesi being denied shooting chances by a resilient Wizards defense. After the match, Wizards Technical Director Peter Mponda said he was happy with the way his players played the game. “Slowly but sure my boys are coming of age now. They showed it with the way they fought against a strong team. We lost our second leg match having drawn in the first leg with the same team last season and this was the right way to revenge. I am happy with the way we have began our journey but it’s a long way to go and there’s still a lot of work to do,” said Mponda. Commenting on assertions that his team won’t be the same having sold key players, the former Flames international said he still believes in the squad he has. “I know most people thought we would lose touch having sold some key players to other super league teams but this won’t be the case. I believe in the players I have plus a few additions that we are yet to finalize. Then people can judge us on results,” Mponda said. Reports which Nyasa Times have established shows that Wizards are chasing for the signatures of  Eneya Banda who was released by Nyasa Big Bullets, Jacob Ngwira and Cuthbert Sinetre who were released by Mighty Be Forward Wanderers. Wizards next assignment in the league sees them travel to the capital city to face Silver Strikers and Kamuzu Barracks.

Tsangano Turn off

Relative calm has returned to the Tsangano trading centre in Ntcheu the border between Malawi and Mozambique, that was rocked by violence between locals on Monday as a Burundian national residing in Mozambique side detained a Malawian trader. [caption id="attachment_108865" align="alignright" width="500"]Tsangano Turn off Tsangano Turn off[/caption] Speculations were rife that the Mozambican military soldiers invaded the Malawi side in a war threatening manner when the messages were put to alert road travellers to avoid the route. But Malawi Police said there was no such military action. “What happened is that a Malawian boy was detained by a Burundian boy staying on Mozambique side at Tsangano,” Malawi Police spokesman Nicholous Gondwa said. “Some other people of bad behaviour, the criminals took advantage [of the situation] and looted some groceries in the Burundian shop,” Gondwa explained. This triggered chaotic scenes among locals. Eye witnesses said Mozambique soldiers crossed the boarders armed to the teeth and caused havoc in Malawi confiscating groceries from Malawians, some which were not even part of loot. Malawi Police made arrests of 12 people over the looting. The suspects are expected to appear in court Tuesday, police said. Tsangano Turn Off Trading Centre in Ntcheu along the M1 Road is an almost irresistible stopover for travellers wishing to buy vegetables and potatoes.

The Catholic faithful in Mangochi have been encouraged to emulate the work of St. Joseph who strived for excellence when carrying out his work. Pic Arnold Namanja (MANA) Fr. Sichinga talking to the media on the activities to mark Labour Day. Pic Arnold Namanja (MANA)[/caption] Vicar General for Mangochi Catholic Diocese, Fr. Andrew Nkhata gave the encouragement on Sunday during the commemoration of World Labour Day which the church also observes as the day for St. Joseph the patron Saint of workers. Nkhata observed that Catholic Christians were supposed to follow Joseph’s example who despite being a carpenter strived for excellence while doing his not so decent job. He said Joseph used to spread the word of God through his work. “Everyone is being called upon to propagate the good news of salvation through the work that he does be it employed or self employed. We need to advance obedience, love for justice and above all else to expunge an aroma of Christianity through our faith in the catholic teaching,” the monsignor added. Nkhata emphasized that Joseph teaches people that work is not just about earning money or a salary but that it was meant to enhance the growth of the church and the development of the country as a whole, noting that faith without good character was as good as dead. “It would be a plausible thing for members of the church to be in the lead in taking part in various development activities taking place in the church through payment of tithe and everything else the church demands from us,” he pointed out. He, therefore, encouraged the catholic flock to follow different labour related principles especially those that promote justice and equality in the labour industry to avoid disputes and oppression. He added that every kind of work was first and foremost meant to assist God to recreate and protect the world. On this note, Nkhata advised the church’s followers to thank God for the gift of employment whether employed or self – employed by demonstrating commitment to the same for their daily survival, noting that the benefits were supposed to trickle down to the less privileged. “The biggest question that we must all attempt to answer today is; how do I serve God in my capacity as a worker,” Nkhata said. In his homily, Nkhata who derived his sermon from the Gospel of John 14: 23 – 29 said Christians’ identity was supposed to be displayed through love for one another. “People will identify you as true disciples through your deeds, words, actions and more importantly on how we care for those underprivileged in our community,” Nkhata observed. Mangochi Diocese Vocations and Youth Chaplain, Fr. Christopher Sichinga said catholic workers across the country were not supposed to be motivated by earning a salary instead they were supposed to get satisfaction out of what one does. Sichinga appealed to young workers to join Young Christian Workers organization whose objective was to deepen the catholic faith among its members besides advancing the social and economic development of the country. “It is my prayer, therefore, that many young people will join YCW to serve God in that capacity,” Sichinga said, adding that YCW has a vision of promoting the Catholic Church’s values and ideologies. Sichinga indicated that work was meant to transform and improve the status of the church and that of the world in its entirety. “My message to the rest of the Catholic fraternity is that we need to commit ourselves to whatever work we do in order to contribute to the integral development of the world,” he said.

Bishop Kalemba of Anglican

The Anglican faithful have been asked to uphold the undertaking the pioneer Missionaries brought in the country in the eighteenth century so that their efforts are not in vain. Paying respect to the first Missionaries.[/caption] Chikwawa Police officer in charge Mac Millan Nyirongo made the call on Sunday during the Church’s celebration of the Universities Mission to Central Africa (UMCA) settlement in Chikhwawa. The Church organises the event at Julius village near Kamuzu Bridge in Chikhwawa where Reverend Henry Carter Scadamore and Dr. John Dickson died in January and March 1863, respectively, along the banks of the Shire River. The Missionaries had settled in the area from April 28, 1862. Nyirongo, who was guest of honour at the event, observed that it did not make any sense to remember the Missionaries work when nothing is done to sustain their laid down foundation. “The Church should look beyond the commemoration. It should rather look at the mission and services the Missionaries brought and then build on that. “The Missionaries did not only abolish the slave trade but also brought development and we should strive to carry on with that," he said. Bishop of Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi, the Right Reverend Alinafe Kalemba said the Church was committed to pursuing the mission through its humanitarian and development works. Initially the church planned to bring an irrigation scheme which is along Shire river banks but the proposal faced ownership problem hitches. Rev. Scadamore and Dr. John Dickson came to Malawi in 1861 in the company of Dr. Charles Mackenzie following a request by Dr. David Livingstone to liberate Malawi then Nyasaland from a roving slave trade. They first settled in Magomero, Chiradzulu but moved on to Chikwawa after Mackenzie died of malaria in 1862.

Wanderers began the match as the better side. No wonder veteran Peter Wadabwa scored the competition’s quickest goal so far with his first touch within the first minute of the first half after receiving a through ball from Rafiq Namwera. However despite starting the match on a high, the Southern region premier league outfit were level sixteen minutes later with Fanuel Fukizi registering his name on the score-sheet. Fukizi’s strike gave a glimmer of hope amongst Cobbe Barracks players who took the game into Wanderer’s half on several occasions but failed to convert their chances into goals. Pressure started mounting on the Nomad’s bench and few minutes later they pulled off their Nigerian import Amos Bello for Jabulani Linje. The early substitution didn’t bother Cobbe who finished the first half on a high. However, soon after the recess, the long wait for Chande to make his Wanderers debut was due and Ted Sumani made way for the former Bullets mid-field mate. A few minutes later, Chande’s name became the toast amongst Wanderers supporters as he reminded them how he used to punish teams at the Kamuzu stadium while in Bullets colours last season. The diminutive Chande jumped passed tall Cobbe defenders to score Wanderer’s second goal from an Isaac Kaliati’s cross setting celebrations amongst Wanderers supporters in the stands. Peter Wadabwa then put the game to bed ten minutes before time scoring after a series of passes between Nomads players. Despite making several efforts towards the last minutes of the game, Cobbe could not get the goals needed to keep them in the competition and it was 3-1 the final result in favour of the Wanderers to the delight of their Coach Jack Chamangwana who was full of praise for his players. “My players deserve the victory because they fought from onset. Yes we had fatigue considering the game we played on Saturday against Bullets but we showed we are a better side and deserve to go through to the next level of the competition. We are focusing on the next game now and its CIVO in the TNM super league,” said Chamangwana. Commenting on Chande’s performance, Chamangwana was full of praise for the former Bullets star. “Everyone knows what he is made up of. He is dangerous both in the air and on the ground. The only thing remaining for him is match fitness and we are working on it during our trainings but overall he is very skillful,”Chamangwana said. In his remarks, Cobbe Barracks Coach Tione Mhone congratulated Wanderers for winning the tie. The former Zomba United Coach also said he was not bitter with the result but it will be homework for him as he prepares his team for the Southern region premier league kick-off.

Abandoned newborn baby rescued

A baby found abandoned in a dirty cloth and left out in the sun to die in northern city of Mzuzu has been saved by a court marshal Ringo Simwaka who found her on Sunday. [caption id="attachment_108925" align="alignright" width="566"]Abandoned newborn baby rescued Abandoned  baby rescued[/caption] Simwaka was on her way to visit her plot and found the baby so lifeless. Mzuzu Police spokersperson Martin Bwanali said the baby was taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital for “care and safety.” Police said they are hunting for the mother of the baby. The mother would face charges of concealing her baby, in contravention of section 232 of the penal code. The incident in Mzuzu came almost after Nyasa Times Reported on Tuesday that  the arrest of woman who dumped her newly born baby in a toilet for fear of her husband who is allegedly based in South Africa since 2012. Mercy Ali, 26, allegedly got involved in an extra-marital affair with another man, resulting in her falling pregnant. It was alleged that she managed to conceal her pregnancy until she gave birth to a baby girl on April 30. Ali then decided to throw the baby in the toilet as she feared her husband, who had left for South Africa in 2012. The incident came to light after a neighbour heard the baby crying from the toilet. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital where she was said to be recovering. Brutal murder In another crime story,  Malawi Police in the lakeshore district of Nkhata Bay are keeping in custody a 27year old woman for brutally killing her 64 year old mother in-law. Nkhata Bay Police Spokesperson Sergeant Ignatius Esau said Sylvia Chirwa allegedly stabbed and killed Leah Banda in the evening on Sunday whilst she was asleep in her house. “Sylvia Chirwa was once married to the deceased's son who lives in South Africa. They were married for nine years and together they have a five year old daughter. But due to some problems, the two divorced and she was sent back home from South Africa,” Sergeant Esau explained. Sergeant Esau said that the son then later asked his mother (now deceased) to find him another woman to marry. The mother found another woman for her son and that did not please the estranged wife. “Reports suggest that the suspect after coming back from South Africa had been threatening to deal with the deceased because she believed that her ex-mother in-law had a hand in the breakup of her marriage,” he narrated. “She stabbed the deceased in the stomach before stabbing her four times at the back using a knife,” Sergeant Esau said. Lloyd Nkhata, another son to the deceased, reported the matter to police. Police and medical personnel rushed to the scene. Sergeant Esau disclosed that the deceased died while she was being taken to Nkhata Bay District Hospital. Postmortem that was conducted revealed that she died due to internal bleeding. Both the suspect and the deceased come from Chibwana village in Traditional Authority Mankhambira in Nkhata Bay district. – Additional reporting by Aliko Munde, Mana

Malawi Police in Phalombe district have arrested three people suspected to have brutally killed a 28-year-old woman and chopped off her breasts. Police have since arrested husband to deceased James Namusiyo, 30, Piason Damson 63-year-old and Mabvuto Mukohowa on murder charges contrary to Section 209 of Penal Code. “She left her home around 2:00am of Saturday April 30th to seek medication from a traditional healer in the nearby village. Later around 10:00am her body was discovered by passersby in a semi-bushy area in Mwambeni village,” explained Phalombe police Public Relations Officer, Gresham Ngwira. A visit to the scene by the police discovered that deceased had multiple stab-wounds in the abdomen, on the elbow of the right arm and in the back. “Her eyes had been deflated and both her breasts removed probably by a sharp object. Her bicycle lay close to her body”. Postmortem results at Mkhwayi Health centre indicated death was as a result of accumulation of blood in the Peritoneum due to multiple stab-wounds in the abdomen. Motive behind this brutal attack is yet to be established. Police have since instituted investigations into the matter. Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jappie Mhango has insisted that government is doing all it can to protect citizens including  people with albinism in the country. “We will tighten security,” said Mhango, adding “government is currently running various programmes to sensitise the public to the evils of killing people with albinism.” Death sentence Meanwhile, commentators are calling for  death sentence penalty for all convicts involved in killing people with albinism  in the country. “I am strongly advocating for use of death penalty, which is already in our laws,  for people murdering our brothers and sisters with albinism,” Stanley Onjezani Kenani, a Malawian social commentator and poet said. Economist Association of Malawi president and motivational speaker, Henry Kachaje took to Facebook that death penalty should be executed on those convicted on albino murderers to deter others. Despite having death sentence in the laws, the country has not carried executions since 1994. The country is struggling to curb a wave of violence against people with albinism - a condition that affects the production of skin pigment. Witchdoctors say potions made from albino body parts can bring good luck and wealth. The international community has sicne  condemned the Malawi Government for failing to protect people with albinism, with both the United Nations and the human rights watchdog Amnesty International (AI), giving damming verdicts on the country’s systematic failures to protect the minority group.--Additional reporting by Green Muheya, Nyasa Times

Student Pregnancy: Depressing statistics in Nkhatabay

A  Magistrate court in NkhataBay has ordered the suspension of 32 boys and girls at one school over pregnancy scandal just in one term, a situation that has raised eye brows over sex activities for teenagers in the lake shore fishing district. [caption id="attachment_70341" align="alignright" width="600"]Student Pregnancy: Depressing statistics in Nkhatabay Student Pregnancy: Depressing statistics in Nkhatabay[/caption] Magistrate Alexander Gomba heard how 16 boys at Hoho secondary school in Chintheche impregnated the 16 girls just four weeks into the new term. The magistrate said it was only proper and good to suspend both the boys and girls to give them ample time to look after the pregnancies, the worst pregnancy scandal at a school in living memory. Gomba said after the girls had delivered, all the 32 were free to return to school and continue with their education. This was after the magistrate had charged the boys with defilement as the girls looked younger than 18 years which could have taken them to jail. However, the head teacher John Msowoya told the court that the girls were all 18 years old, saving the boys from going to jail for defilement. Primary Education Advisor for Chintheche Peter Chirwa welcomed the ruling but parents of the children pleaded with the court to remove the suspension and accused the curriculum for fuelling sex amongst the youth saying the children are taught sex issues that they are not supposed to hear. The 32 parents now risk K10, 000 fine for each student because of a standing rule in the area which prohibits school girls from getting pregnant and boys impregnating girls. Reports indicate that the head teacher is receiving threats for disclosing that the girls were pregnant as this will force the parents pay the K10, 000 fine to the elders of the area. The case was brought to court by a child protection NGO, Maranda Child Protection Committee.

Vice President Saulos Chilima has hinted that government might go ahead opening the state-of-the-art Bingu National Stadium despite Ministry of Sports and Culture failing to secure a K500 million funding for completion of some facilities at the stadium. Amongst the facilities the Ministry is expected to put in place include a sewer system, electricity, an MTL fibre cable and furniture. The stadium does also not have an evacuation system. Presently, the stadium is using electricity power used for the construction, which is not enough for other functions requiring power including floodlights. But speaking when he toured the stadium on Wednesday, Chilima felt the outstanding elements were very little to hamper the stadium opening. “From what I have seen, the sewer system remains the crucial issue since there are over 800 toilets at the stadium. Once the sewer system has been installed, I think H.E can open the stadium. We should not be worried about playing football at night. In the state it is, the stadium can host a football match or any other activity during the day as long as the critical issue has been addressed. “We can look at the other elements after opening the stadium,” said Chilima, who took over an hour inspecting the facilities and being briefed by Sports Ministry officials. On safety of spectators, the Vice President admitted safety was of paramount importance and assured government would ensure there is maximum safety at the stadium. He gave an example of the 76,000-seater Old Trafford Stadium- home to English giants Manchester United, where he said all spectators can be evacuated within eight minutes in case of an emergency. Sports Minister Grace ‘Obama’ Chiumia, who invited the Vice President to visit the stadium expressed optimism that the stadium would open soon. “My wish is to see the stadium opened before July 6 but that all depends on the availability of funds at Treasury. The stadium could have been opened by now but there are other critical issues that government is addressing at the moment like the food shortage, shortage of drugs in our hospitals, the natural disasters and other economic problems that the country is experiencing. “But I am hopeful that Treasury will find a way before the 2016-2017 budget is approved,” by Parliament,” she said. Chiumia said there were few things which are needed to be finalised such as solar lights, Malawi Telecommunication Limited (MTL) cables and Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (Escom) main cable need to be connected. She said this will cost government about MK500 million, after the completion the stadium will be opened. Chiumia said: “The construction of the sewer line will depend on the availability of the funds, if available it can be started as soon as they can be installed. “As we all know that priority is sewer line, yes we have generators which can be used as electricity for a one day function. But there are issues which we need to sit down as a cabinet and discuss”. She said government prioritises sports and the evidence of its commitment is the construction of the Bingu National Stadium and the support that it gives to the teams of the country.

Young business leaders from seven countries in Southern Africa have agreed to establish a new Commonwealth Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs to promote entrepreneurship and trade across the region. [caption id="attachment_108995" align="alignright" width="600"]Young entrepreneurs regional alliance with Malawi Rachel Sibande of mHub (second from right) Young entrepreneurs regional alliance with Malawi Rachel Sibande of mHub (second from right)[/caption] The decision to form the alliance came this week at a workshop organised in Windhoek, Namibia, by the Commonwealth Secretariat for representatives of national youth entrepreneurship organisations from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia. The alliance, which will formally launch later this year, will support young African entrepreneurs as they seek to boost youth employment, contribute to trade, and support the Sustainable Development Goals, recognising that young people play an important role in wealth creation and poverty reduction. Katherine Ellis, Director of Youth at the Commonwealth Secretariat, stated that the Commonwealth Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs-Southern Africa (CAYE-SA) will play a role in building human capital, unleashing the economic potential of young people and promoting sustainable growth and development. “As well as driving trade within and across borders, this new coalition will give the young entrepreneurs a voice with policy-makers to enhance the youth entrepreneurship environment, and a peer network for support and sharing of experiences and good practice,” she said. “The Southern Africa region has so many passionate and talented young entrepreneurs, all hungry to grow their businesses and contribute to their countries’ prosperity,” Ms Ellis  added. Lynette Ntuli, founder of IgniteSA, a youth entrepreneurship organisation from South Africa, who was appointed Interim Chair of the Alliance, said: “It is an honour to be selected by my peers to lead the interim board as we prepare to get on with the critical work of co-ordinating and collaborating on entrepreneurial development programmes and enterprises. “It is my hope that the work we have set out to achieve will gain traction and make the necessary impact for the greater good of both our economies and the young entrepreneurs who operate within them.” The move to establish the new association follows the establishment of Commonwealth Alliances of Young Entrepreneurs in Asia, the Caribbean and East Africa, all with support from the Commonwealth Secretariat. Leaders from these associations assisted with the workshop in Nambia this week, sharing their experiences with the young entrepreneurs from Southern Africa. In many countries across the Southern Africa region, young entrepreneurs have limited access to capital, lack skills and experience and have limited exposure to business networks. Mfundo Mohammed, the Interim Deputy Chair of the from the Innovators Association of Swaziland, said: “Young entrepreneurs face serious challenges when trying to pursue their ideas and start up successful businesses. CAYE-SA is a great chance for us to network, learn from each other, and collaborate, in an effort to achieve real progress in youth entrepreneurship and innovation in Southern Africa.” Participating organisations in the Commonwealth Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs-Southern Africa (CAYE-SA) include: Rlabs - Botswana National Youth Entrepreneurs Forum - Lesotho mHUB - Malawi Youth to Youth Empowerment - Malawi Junior Chamber International - Namibia GEN - Namibia Young Entrepreneur South Africa - South Africa IgniteSA - South Africa Innovators Association of Swaziland - Swaziland Junior Achievement -  Swaziland Young Entrepreneurs Association - Zambia Junior Achievement - Zambia

Soon after the recess, Bullets made triple substitution with Muhammad Sulumba, Diverson Mlozi and Kondwani Kumwenda who came on for Msowoya, Mussa Manyenje and Mike Mkwate. This was Kumwenda’s first game in Bullets colours since crossing the road from rivals Mighty Be Forward Wanderers. The trio made immediate impact into the game and a few minutes later Sulumba scored through a header after lashing through a weak Sable defense. However, despite conceding a third goal, the Mapanga based club orchestrated a move few minutes later that resulted into a goal with Hector Limau registering his name on the score-sheet. It was a move that saw Bullets keeper Owen Chaima frustrated as he failed to dive when the ball fell through the goal to the delight of a few section of Sable supporters who came to watch the game. Soon after Sable scored a consolation goal, Kabichi completed his brace this time from a short corner, a move which he started. Sulumba completed the scoring 11 minutes before time sealing Bullets progress to the next round of the competition – which is the national phase. It was a game that saw Sable Farming goalkeeper Benito Sabola playing without gloves. When Nyasa Times tried to check on the development, the response from Football Association of Malawi’s Competitions Manager Gomezgani Zakazaka was that Sabola did not want to despite officials pleading with him. Speaking to reporters, Bullets Coach Franco Ndawa said he was happy to see his team through to the next round of the Presidential cup. “Am very happy with the result considering the changes we made. The boys  put up a good fight no wonder we got the five goals and the focus now is on the next game. Sable is a good team and gave us a good game,” said Ndawa. In his remarks, Sable F.C Coach Itaye Kachala congratulated Bullets for winning the tie. He said Bullets is a good team and playing them at the Kamuzu Stadium was somehow difficult for his boys. “Playing in front a large crowd is somehow difficult and you saw how my boys were taunted by the supporters. But we have learnt a lot from this game and competition in particular. We are out and life has to move on,” Kachala said. Bullets next assignment is a TNM Super League match in Salima against MAFCO at the Chitowe ground on Sunday. ,

President Mutharika: Do not sell your maize to vendors

President Arthur Peter Mutharika has asked Malawians not to sell their harvest to vendors at a time when the country is experiencing another spell of food shortage, a situation that has forced government to declare a state of national disaster. [caption id="attachment_108783" align="alignright" width="600"]President Mutharika: Do not sell your maize to vendors President Mutharika: Do not sell your maize to vendors[/caption] In a statement posted on his  official Facebook page on Wednesday, President Mutharika discouraged those depleting their household food stocks from continuing with such tendency. “It has come to my notice that some families across the country are already selling the grain they have harvested to vendors let alone at very low prices. As such this sad trend of letting go our food stocks this early does not augur well with our desire to ensure that every household has enough food up until the next harvesting season,” wrote the President. Media reports have indicated that vendors are rushing to villages to buy maize capitalizing on low real income of desperate people. Following two farming seasons of drought, the President early this year declared Malawi a state of national disaster and called upon the international community to intervene. His call has already yielded results with many stakeholders giving Malawi money to buy extra maize from neighbouring countries. While remaining optimistic with the help Malawi has so far received, the President emphasized that there is no need to be careless with the food already in homes. “We must jealously guard our food stocks at household level. My government will surely have enough food for you but that does not give us a leeway to sell the little we have,” he said. Malawi and other countries in the Sub Sahara region have for the past three years been hit by El Nino spell which has affected the pattern of rainfall in the region. This pattern has brought little or destructive rains across the board.

Minister of Health, Peter Kumpalume: Abuse of resources in Ministry of Health

Ministry of Health has confirmed the report by Nyasa Times of the  existence of  a National Audit Office (NAO) audit report chronologizing on how some dishonest officials from the ministry managed to loot the donated funds from the US- funded Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and that K2.5billion  was looted between 2013 and 2015. [caption id="attachment_101889" align="alignright" width="600"]Minister of Health, Peter Kumpalume: Abuse of resources in Ministry of Health Minister of Health, Peter Kumpalume: Abuse of resources in Ministry of Health[/caption] Spokesperson for Ministry of Health, Adrian Chikumbe said the NAO report has implicated director of finance, human resources and HIV in the ministry as well as rank outsiders from the ministry who connived  with staff to plunder the resources mercilessly. “A total of K399, 421,090, 00 was given to individuals whose names could not be traced [and ] a total of  K1,045, 068, 020,00 was issued to officers whose designation wa snot indicated,” reads part of the NAO report Chikumbe said fiscal police will “investigate further” the scam. The report also indicated there was poor fuel management which resulted in abuse of  K277, 114, 171, 62. Chikumbe, however, said all employees implicated have since been interdicted. In December 2015, Malawi Government suspended 63  workers from the Ministry. These included the Director of human resource, the Director of finance and two chief accountants to pave way for a thorough audit investigation over unjustified withdrawal of allowances and fuel abuse. The dismissal of the health officials followed the complaint which the US-funded Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had made to the Malawi Government where it suspected that some officials were dipping their fingers into CDC coffers which were meant to address HIV and Aids problem. Ministry of Health Dr Peter Kumpalume told media that  the stolen money were in “millions”, adding that the US- funded Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had written the ministry to complain that they suspected civil servants from the HIV and AIDS project were to be defrauding the said funds. Kumpalume admitted that abuse of resources in his ministry. “A few greedy individuals who want to benefit out of the poor are embezzling money in the health system, projects have stalled. We need to jointly come up with a monitoring mechanism, follow ethics and be patriotic. “It is sad to note that for an individual to carry out a project the cost is  reasonable but for the same project to be carried out by government the figures multiplies,” lamented Kumpalume when he toured  College of Medicine (CoM) in Blantyre . He noted that most projects are abandoned or ignored due to bloated figures. US ambassador to Malawi, Virginia Palmer, expressed the hope that the authorities “will identify those responsible for the looting and that they will be held accountable for the misuse of funds intended to improve the health of Malawian citizens.”

Jailed albino hunters

Two men have been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in Malawi after being found guilty of murdering an albino Davis Fretcher Machinjiri a week ago. [caption id="attachment_108968" align="alignright" width="368"]Brutally attacked person with albinism in Malawi Brutally attacked person with albinism in Malawi[/caption] [caption id="attachment_109032" align="alignright" width="276"]Jailed albino hunters Jailed albino hunters[/caption] [caption id="attachment_108967" align="alignright" width="368"]Remains of late Dvais Fletcher of Machinjiri, a victim of albino attacks Remains of late Dvais Fletcher of Machinjiri, a victim of albino attacks[/caption] The two heard through state prosecutor assistant Superintendent Patrick Bean Chambuluka that Vuto Biswick and Emmanuel Robert on the 23 April 2016 at Chimoto village in the area of traditional authority Kaphuka in Dedza killed the person with albinism because they believed his body parts had special powers. After killing Machinjiri, took some of the body parts to Mozambique for rituals. Witchdoctors say potions made from the body parts of albinos - who lack pigment in their skin, eyes and hair - can bring good luck and wealth. They are prepared to pay K50 million for a complete set of albino body parts. But authorities said such beliefs were false. Chambuluka told the court that though these two pleaded guilty as charged, they deserve a stiff sentence. Before passing sentence the first grade Magistrate Enete Jiya Banda took the picture and showed the court how a 17 year old Machinjiri was butchered to death by two young offenders. Enete Jiya Banda said that what the convicts did is unwelcome to the society. She said that a life was lost because of the convicts and  sentenced them to 6 years imprisonment with hard labour on the first count of conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to section  404 of penal code,12 years IHL on second count of abducting with intent to murder contrary to section 261 of penal code which she said should run concurrently and 13 years imprisonment with hard labour on third count of trafficking in person contrary to section 15 sub section  (1) of trafficking act no 3 of 2015. The  court adjourned the case after state prosecutor appealed to seek interpretation from the  High Court on whether to proceed  with the offence as the offence of trafficking in person attracts the maximum sentence of 21years which is beyond jurisdiction of the first grade magistrate. Officer in-charge for Dedza Mrs Emmie Soko assistant commissioner of police was among the audience in the court to witness the sentence of the albino murderers. One of the people who attended the court told Nyasa Times: “These evil people should rot in jail, they are a disgrace. We don't want them back into this community."

Muluzi: Malawi former president case falling apart, his lawyers asks for discharge

Prosecutors in the ongoing ‘K1.7 billion’ ($2.5 million) corruption case involving former president Bakili Muluzi have withdrawn from the high profile case, prompting the state to ask Judge Maclean Kamwambi to discharge Muluzi. [caption id="attachment_50598" align="alignright" width="600"]Muluzi: Malawi former president case falling apart, his lawyers asks for discharge Muluzi: Malawi former president case falling apart, his lawyers asks for discharge[/caption] The surprise turn of events happened when the court met Thursday at the High Court in Blantyre. Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) deputy director Reyneck Matemba who is the lead prosecutor and his colleague State lawyer Chrispin Khunga who were prosecuting the case asked Judge Kamwambe to stand aside from the case just as the court session was to start. Since trial resumed on April 11 2016 over K100 million has been deducted from the K1.7 billion Muluzi and his co-accused, Lyness Violet Whiskey, are accused to have fraudulently acquired. Whiskey is a former personal assistant to Muluzi and was handling bank transactions like deposits of the former president when he was in power. Government initially claimed Muluzi’s corruption case stemmed from donor money in his account but former president has always denied wrong doing saying no foreign country would deposit donor money in a personal account. He claimed the case was trumped up for political reasons. Since the nine-year-old case resumed on April 11 2016, the defence expressed optimism that the figures will be deducted to zero from the K1.7 billion. After prosecutors asked to quit the case, apparently due to lack of objective material evidence,   Judge Kamwambe went ahead and granted them the application, signalling that the state has abandoned the case. Judge Kamwambe pointed out that the state prosecution “ is in total disarray in this case.” “Before I make my own opinion on the matter let me ask the defence the application it wants to make,” he said. Tamando Chokotho private practise lawyer for the former president Muluzi applied to the same court to discharge Muluzi and his co-accused Whiskey. However, the judge said he would make the ruling another day. Chokotho said it was senseless to proceed with the case when the state had abandoned the case. The case has been dragging for 17 years now and the move by the state to pull out of the case will bring in mixed reactions on the government fight against graft.

Lucius Banda: Prophet Bushiri is successful man and that invites haters

Malawi top musician-cum-legislature Lucius Banda has said he admires multimillionaire South African based Malawian Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and said those on smear campaign against him are unfair to the “Major 1.” [caption id="attachment_70559" align="alignright" width="342"]Lucius Banda: Prophet Bushiri is successful man and that invites haters Lucius Banda: Prophet Bushiri is successful man and that invites haters[/caption] [caption id="attachment_101806" align="alignright" width="600"]Bushiri and South African's Home Affairs minister Bushiri and South African's Home Affairs minister[/caption] [caption id="attachment_95900" align="alignright" width="600"]Churchgoers at Bushiri church in Pretoria Churchgoers at Bushiri church in Pretoria[/caption] [caption id="attachment_91559" align="alignright" width="600"]Members congregating during Diplomatic Service including Chri Daza (first from right) at Bushiri's church Members congregating during Diplomatic Service including Chri Daza (first from right) at Bushiri's church[/caption] Banda, Malawi's top musician, who is also Balaka North legislator for the United Democratic Front (UDF), said on a private visit to South Africa, said he stopped by to fellowship with Prophet Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) in Pretoria on Monday night and was impressed with the respect accorded to the Malawian prophet, according a report in The Nation newspaper. “We live in our world as Malawians and that has not helped us. After fellowship, I realised we have been somehow unfair to Bushiri by viewing him with a negative eye instead of being rational,” the paper quoted the iconic secular musician as saying. He added: “It is worth noting that thousands of people are converging at one place because of a son Malawi. I admire him for that.” Banda, who is a devout Catholic,  said he has not joined Bushiri’s ECG as he remains a Catholic member but appreciate the prophet’s Christian way of leadership. “Just like the Bible says that ‘out of the eater comes something sweet’ I was touched by the gesture of giving out food to the poor during that hunger in January and February. Through the criticism he has been going through, I took interest in seeing his side of the story,” Banda is quoted as saying. The legendary musician said Prophet Bushiri is “successful,  in terms of congregation and as a businessman.” He added that “success brings about haters” hence Bushiri courting many attacks against him. “ As someone who has been criticised, at times unfairly, and faced the wrath of people over rumours, I tend to be sympathetic towards people who are treated harshly, especially when it’s based on unfounded rumours.” Bushiri’s  church is one of the fastest rising in Southern Africa. Banda said he was impressed with the Monday fellowship at Bushiri’s church. “They call it a diplomatic service. I like the teachings and the ideas shared to the gathering. The beauty about it is that it happens on a day that I, as a Catholic normally don’t go to church. Otherwise I can’t say more than that. Issues of faith are supposed to be private. “Actually, I came here for personal reasons. And I just thought of going there to fellowship. I have attended two Monday services where about 10 000 people gather for prayers. It was during that first time that I took a picture with BJ [veteran politician Brown Mpinganjira] and Ralph Kasambara. But I must say that when I went to ECG, I felt proud as a Malawian to note that it was a son of our soil who makes thousands of people around the world come together and pray,” he said. During Sunday services, people line up just to enter the church, he said “The queues are long, with 45 000 plus people attending services, according to the information I have gathered. How I wish it was happening in my country,” he explained.
